Certified vascular centres

In Germany, around 80–100 hospitals have certified vascular centres. The certification application must provide a detailed account of 22 criteria groups. The focus is on quality aspects, such as the provision of a vascular consultation service as a point of contact, the guarantee of round-the-clock care by fully qualified specialists, expertise gained through high case numbers, effective interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in quality assurance measures, or the existence of a training authorisation. The detailed requirements can be found on the website of the Private Academy DGG GmbH, which coordinates the certifications on behalf of the DGG e.V. There you will also find the statutes for the certification of vascular centres, together with the report on the evidence base for the development of the criteria catalogue for the ‘Certified Vascular Centre’ certificate.

Please note that certification is an ongoing process. If you cannot find a centre of interest to you on the list, please enquire with us as to whether this centre may be undergoing the certification process. Below you will find the certified vascular centres listed alphabetically by location. We accept no liability for the timeliness, accuracy or completeness of the information.

Further Information on Certification

The German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine, coordinated by the Private Academy DGG, offers the opportunity to certify vascular centres. The German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine proved to be a pioneer and innovator in this field with its groundbreaking idea of implementing interdisciplinary certification of vascular surgery, radiology and angiology, which was unique and unprecedented when it was first introduced in 2004. Many professional associations turn to vascular surgery for advice on certification. The health insurance companies in the federal states of Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland have integrated certification into their hospital planning. In many areas of medicine, disease-oriented interdisciplinary centres of excellence have been established in recent years (trauma centres, oncology centres, vascular centres, etc.).

There are many reasons for forming these centres:

-Improving quality through interdisciplinary patient care
-Stronger integration of outpatient and inpatient care
-Better positioning in an increasingly competitive and economically oriented healthcare system
-Optimal public image through expansion of the range of diagnoses and therapies

In order to guarantee the quality associated with the term "vascular centre", it is necessary to define standards for personnel, equipment and therapy. Whether a centre meets these standards is verified in the certification process. To obtain certification, a written application must be completed and submitted, which can be requested by email (certification[at]gefaesschirurgie.de) from the office.

After an initial review, the application documents are forwarded to the certification section. If the requirements are met on paper, an audit is carried out by one or more auditors.  After a successful audit, the applicant is officially recognised as a certified vascular centre and listed accordingly. The vascular centres certified to date are listed on the website of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine. It is also possible to have the centre certified by the German Society for Angiology and/or the German Society for Radiology.

Additional guidance in finding a certified vascular centre can be found in the Federal Clinic Atlas.
