Academy of Excellence
In order to promote young talent and further develop academic vascular surgery, the Executive Board established the Academy of Excellence (EA) of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) in 2017.
Even then, it was clear that this initiative was important, even necessary, for filling W3 professorships and maintaining, filling and establishing academic positions in general. Fewer doctors in general and fewer vascular surgeons in particular mean that there are fewer people available for these positions. It is only logical to strengthen this area, pool resources and focus on young academics. After five years, further development, adaptation and reorientation were necessary.
Since the 2023 amendment, the Academy of Excellence has been focusing on candidates who are suitable for applying for academic leadership positions in the future, thereby expanding the pool of eligible candidates. This is because academic representation of the field of vascular surgery is an important basis for the visibility, further development and securing of the subject's existence across its entire breadth and across all care structures.

Funding Instruments
In addition to clinical skills, university managers need other competencies: they must have research and teaching skills as well as management and personnel management skills. The Excellence Academy aims to strengthen all of these skills, tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of each individual member. In addition, general content will also be taught.
The modules promote competence in the following areas:
| - | Leadership |
| - | Personnel management |
| - | Business administration and controlling |
| - | Research and publication activities |
| - | Third-party funding acquisition |
| - | Appointment procedures |
| - | Networking |
| - | Volunteer work, e.g. commission work for the DGG |
The mentors convey this content and also establish close ties with the members of the academy through professional coaching. It is expected that they will achieve the above-mentioned skills within a period of approximately four years.
